First up, we flew KLM Business Class from Austin to Amsterdam. While not the most cutting edge business class seat in the world it was still a comfortable ride with good food and a friendly crew. Only complaint was the shoulder space when trying to sleep as it was a little tight.

KLM Crown Lounge 25 Amsterdam (AMS)

After arriving from Austin, we had a roughly 2 hour layover in Amsterdam before our connecting flight to Frankfurt so we headed to the lounge. The Crown Lounge 25 is the smaller of the 2 KLM lounges in Amsterdam and serves the Schengen gates. Overall the lounge was fine but the glass walls make you feel like you're inside of a fish tank with people looking in at you.

KLM Cityhopper E190 EuroBiz (AMS-FRA)

After our layover in Amsterdam we had a short flight down to Frankfurt on KLM Cityhopper, their regional subsidiary, on the E190. WHile European Business Class is not great, Business Class on the E190 is worse as there are no middle seats to block. We also encountered some weather delays and got remote stands at both ends of the trip. Though they did serve a full meal on a 38 minute flight. You're lucky to get a beverage refill on a US carrier in that time.

Park Hotel & Spa KATHARINA Badenweiler, Germany

For the first stop on our trip we were in Badenweiler, Germany on the edge of the Black Forest for the wedding of some of our friends. Their wedding website suggested the Park Hotel & Spa KATHARINA and we booked our one bedroom suite directly via the hotel website. I usually stay at Marriott properties and went into this stay with zero expectations. The room was nice, though a little dated, and the hotel and location worked perfectly for us.

Exploring Badenweiler

Our first stop on this trip was the Black Forest resort town of Badenweiler. We were only here for a couple of days which were mainly comprised of wedding festivities but we still had time to do a little sightseeing.

Badenweiler to Montreux via Swiss Federal Railways

Getting from Badenweiler to Montreux took longer than expected due to delays and a feud between Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways which made for some extra connections. All in all we took 5 different trains over 4 hours to get between the two cities.

Our first stop in Switzerland was in the riviera town of Montreux, located on the opposite end of Lake Geneva from the city of Geneva. For our 3 day stay here we booked at the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic, a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel in the heart of the city.

The hotel and staff were extremely nice and welcoming and the view from our room couldn't be beaten. Full writeup at the link below.

Exploring Montreux

We arrived in Montreux mid-afternoon and after checking in to the hotel we headed out to explore the city. The scenery around the area is amazing with the massive French/Swiss Alps and Lake Geneva as the backdrop. We spent a couple of days here and easily could have spent more.

To get from Montreux to Zermatt we had a much easier train journey that our previous two. This trip was simple, Montreux to Visp on an SBB CFF FFS Inter Regional train connecting to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn that took us up the mountain to Zermatt.

We had a quick overnight in Zermatt and Mrs. H2O had a vision of where she wanted to stay for this part of the trip. She handled the hotel booking and found a great place in the Chalet Hotel Schönegg. While the hotel was situated up on the hill, with great views of the Matterhorn, it was connected to town via a tunnel which made it very easy to get around. Full write up at the link below.

We only had 24 hours in Zermatt and wanted to make the most of it. We spent the first day exploring the town and spent the second riding the Gornergrat Bahn up to the peak and hiking around the area.

Our time in Zermatt was short and after 24 hours we were back at Zermatt Bahnhof to head to our final destination, Zurich. Unlike our five train trip from Badenweiler to Montreux, this trip would be relatively painless. An hour on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn from Zermatt to Visp and a quick transfer to a regional train to Zurich should make for an easy travel day.

To wrap up our trip we spent three nights in Zurich. There were a few different Marriott properties around town though only 2 were within walking distance of the old town where we wanted to be, the Marriott Zurich and the Neues Schloss Privat Hotel. We chose the Neues Schloss based on location and had a decent stay, though for a hotel that charges over $500 per night, you'd think they'd have air conditioning that could cool the room.

For our last destination on this trip, we had three days in Zurich. While both Mrs. H2O and I have been to Switzerland before, this was our first trip to Zurich. We stayed in the Enge District, near District 1 and the Altstadt which made it very easy to get around and see the sights.

The weather was a bit warm for Zurich this time of year but felt great to us. We spent a majority of our time along the waterfront eating, drinking, and enjoying the atmosphere. We also checked out some museums during our stay.

During our stay in Zurich we decided to take a day trip over to Liechtenstein and check another country off of our list. While it isn't far away, getting to Liechtenstein can be complicated to to its limited connectivity. Ultimately we found an itinerary on an Austrian Railways RailJet train with a bus transfer at Buchs to get us there and back.

There isn't a ton to see and do here but we walked around the town for a couple of hours and had lunch before heading back to Zurich.

After a week and a half abroad it was time to head back to Austin. Since we were flying KLM Business Class from Zurich, we had access to the Marhaba Lounge prior to our flight.
