The hive beetles are more of a nuisance than anything. If your hive is weak they can be a problem or if your hive swarms and you have honey boxes on the bees that are left have too much real estate to protect. The hive beetles and wax moths will overwhelm them. Strong hives will keep them in check. It is pretty amusing when checking hives to watch the bees start attacking the hive beetles. I just smash as many as I can with my hive tool. The bees will keep them cornered and I have even seen them caulk them into a corner with the propolis.
