Do they do this to protect the hotels or something?

I'll get downvoted for this, but I don't like the idea of STRs in New Orleans (at least in neighborhoods). A coworker of mine lives in the Garden District and a few years ago, somebody turned their neighbors house into a AirBNB. It then just turned into having drunk, loud tourist throwing parties in it. It got so bad the neighbors actually got the city to do something to stop it.

New Orleans has plenty of hotel rooms, why do they need to rent out houses as well?

Not specific to New Orleans but when I go on long trips with friends and family (7+ days with 6+ people) we usually rent houses. Beach and mountains. I suppose some people would do the same if they came to New Orleans.
