Yeah, if you needed me to tell you that, you are a nerd. I’m sure you’ve always known that though.

I do not understand the Tahoe thing. They are nice but aren’t that reliable and age poorly because they release new body types so often.

For example, I have a 2014 4Runner which still has the same body type as the current version (with minor add ons and modifications obviously). It still looks pretty up to date for that reason. A 2014 Tahoe is visibly dated by there having been several models since, on the other hand.

If I’m getting a luxury SUV, a Lexus GX is a better buy imo.

And people wasting money on super-expensive automobiles they can't afford except for insanely extended loan terms will not be able to retire, will leave their children a thrice-mortgaged home, and will force their children to take out student loans to go to a state school.

RASS (Readily accessible status symbol).

It's a function of suburban life especially in south Louisiana and I assume other areas of the South. People have been sold that non-rare, non luxury goods are somehow a status symbol, and they will pay luxury rate for them as a class symbol.

You see it with name brands on things like purses, too.

Also, what percentage of folks with 4x4 vehicles ever really use that capability? Maybe 10%?

Probably 99.9% of moms with those vehicles with little travel ball shits go to a beach you can drive on. A1A life

everyone loves them. It’s not a suburban or southern thing.

They are everywhere in the rural Midwest and in the hood.

This is a great thread to merge with the “What do people do who don’t have enough money for retirement .” thread.

That's the readily accessible part. That's what makes people viewing them as status symbols so funny.

I doubt the luxury trims and status symbols are that popular outside of suburban areas, and I can confirm it's REALY popular in the South.

Are you saving enough for retirement, or are taxpayers going to have to support you because you blew money on trying to keep up appearances with the other sheep? Did you get a stimulus for covid either time? If you did you're a poor who shouldn't be wasting money on a 70k Chevrolet.

I guess I just think this is overstated

My next vehicle will be a Tahoe or a gx. I don’t view it as a status symbol, I just want a full size suv.

I’m not sure why people would pay as much as they do if they weren’t a status symbol to some extent. It at the very least is a sort of hive mind thing where people aren’t actually looking at the options out there and are just buying what their other successful friends buy without thinking too much about it.

They are nice, but there are other nice cars for less money or imo nicer cars for around the same price.

I think most of the point of this thread is the "status symbol" part of this (hence the need for 4x4 that will almost never be used).

GM is loving this. Chevy is now status symbol tier for tens of millions of Americans with money

You know deep down they REALLY want a Land Rover or GLS, too

Suburbans and Tahoes are almost always exclusively driven by women. I've noticed this for the last 20 years or so. If you have money the wife is driving a Suburban, not a mini van. Also, the amount of trucks, 4x4, you see on the road these days is insane. Growing up, if someone had a truck you knew they needed it for doing work. Now these things only haul groceries and get washed and waxed weekly while getting horrible gas mileage.
