This bridge is 71 years old ?

Bridges are machines and this one is 71 years old ?

Go and stand on a bridge similar to this one and you will feel it vibrate up and down. Bridges are designed to do this and if they didn't they would break.

But like any machine after a few years they will wear out.

When I drive to Houston from beirut Rouge I use US 190 through Merryville.

How much time does that add?

The bridge needs to a complete redesign. The steep angles up and down cause drivers to be overly cautious, creating severe traffic....which causes big trucks to get caught in low gears and sometimes stall out.

Any updates from this hearing?

I was curious about the public appetite for tolls on a highway that we already pay taxes to maintain.

I-10 should be top priority for the next admin. Get the Lake Charles bridge resolved and fix the approach and off ramps of the "New" Mississippi river bridge in Baton Rouge.

Public Hearing on I10 Bridge

I’m not a fuddyduddy, but that’s a dangerous place to hold a public hearing.

The bridge won't be completed until 2031, and that's if nothing comes up to delay it further.

Here's the link to the DOTD's presentation at the hearing.

Public Hearing on I10 Bridge

Probably not the safest place to have a hearing

enough with environmental studies already

The moment a state or locality takes federal funding, they can't just say enough on environmental studies. Federal requirements delayed a relatively uncomplicated toll road extension in my area by over three years.

Absolutely. That bridge was built to be part of Hwy. 90 prior to the existence of the interstate system. It was out of code the day it was incorporated into I-10. The fact that more than a generation has passed since they first began to discuss replacing it is appalling.

Not from Lake Charles so I don’t know, would the new bridge need to be so high?

The new bridge would be much lower

The current bridge has a clearance of 135 feet. They've recommended a clearance of 73 feet for the new bridge.

IIRC 1988, the first Presidential Election where I could vote, Democrat Senator Dick Gephardt from Missouri who was running against the plagiarist Senator Biden and the eventual DNC Primary winner the original soy boy Dukakis, was in Lake Charles campaigning on coming back to Lake Charles to cut the ribbon for the new I-10 bridge after he was elected.

Same old shite, Louisiana. 35 years. I love this place for outdoors and culture, but you can bet your arse I am headed to the mountains when I retire to get away from this eternal and politically inbred BS.

2.1 billion for a bridge is a joke.

So much grift

There’s definitely waste of time and money, but the plan includes upgrading interchanges and a few miles of highway on either end of the bridge itself. It’s about a 5 mile long project. 30 years ago it was just a bridge, now it’s a bridge and a stretch of roadway.

You are correct. I am pleased by the effort that the SWLA politicians are viewing this plan. Rep. Phillip Tarver said it best-"Build just the bridge that we can afford."

Upon my understanding the Louisiana State Legislature Transportation Committee will vote to accept the proposal this month.
