I smoked from 13-20. I decided I wanted to quit, so I just quit smoking. I didn't find the physical addiction difficult to get past at all, and that was out my system in a week or two. What was a challenge were the habits involved. At certain points of a drive home I would light up as well as after eating, with coffee and such. THOSE were tough, because I had to break the mental habits of those moments.

I did it though, because I didn't want to smoke anymore. It takes willpower and determination to just not do it.

I can promise you this: the time will come where you no longer even think about it (took me a few months), and then the time will come where just the smell of them will gross you out.

After smoking about a pack a day, I quit cold turkey about 20 years ago. The first week is really rough, but it does get easier. I'd say it takes at least three months to fully kick the habit.

This is pretty much exactly my experience.
