The interesting facts about SC auto production is they got a leg up in the Euro car market by bringing in BMW in the early 90s which has led them to be the #1 car exporting state in the US (BMW, Volvo, and Mercedes) and also the #1 tire exporting state in the US (Michelin and Bridgestone). There are over 500 auto-related businesses in SC now.
I'm not sure how many automotive companies are located on Mississippi, but it's a ton as well. Yokohama and Continental AG have new plants here.
Aerospace and defense are even more important in Mississippi. There's an Airbus helicopter factory, GE jet engine plant, NASA's Stennis Space Center, Rolls Royce North America engine testing, and Ingalls Shipbuilding which builds and maintains about half of the surface fleet for the US Navy and Coast Guard and employs over 12,000 people.
There are over a dozen smaller, specialized companies as well some of which work in conjunction with MSU, which has the top UAV program in the country.
The Airbus A320neo and A220 factory is in nearby Mobile, Alabama which employ some Mississippi residents.
