I don't need a story in everything, certainly. Some games, like Rimworld you kind of make the entire story yourself based on who you get and what happens.
With Civ-style games, the random map and tech tree sort of write a story of sorts if you want to think that way.
I don't need a story for racing games, fighting games or shooters (and I don't play very many of any of them lately, although I want to get into racing games with the grandchildren). They great enhancements to enjoyment for things like Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption.
