As I get older, I realized that while I still prefer story-based games, I much prefer those that keep you in control. I cannot stand most long cutscenes, but I can tolerate essentially the same content being fed to me if it means I can still retain control of my character and interact with the world during story segments.
I also find that most modern video game stories suck, so it falls back on the gameplay to keep me hooked.
Case in point, I used to think Assassin's Creed games had some of the best storylines in gaming, and the writing just completely fell off a cliff when Unity was released, and the games haven't recovered since.

I agree with all of this. I don’t mind short cutscenes where you lose control if the camera angle, etc, is really important. But for the most part? Leave me in game, in engine, in control as much as possible.
And don’t make it character say stupid shite I would never have him say…
