Stamps was an under evaluated prospect through high school, but after putting on significant size this offseason, it’s changed his game drastically.

He’s noticeably stronger and it’s been a key piece to his game when lining up against physical players like Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr.

Brian Kelly praised Stamps’ diligent work in the weight room and how he quickly utilized the resources in Baton Rouge. He looks the part and Kelly raved about the rise of his true freshman cornerback.

"Ashton's a true freshman who put on a lot of weight. I think many of you remember us recruiting him, maybe he was a bit, I would say, underweight at the position for us,” Kelly said during fall camp. “We're excited about his competitiveness and his athleticism but we challenged him to get after it in the weight room and he certainly did in the offseason and then this summer and he looks the part. He's doing a really good job as a true freshman."

LSU safety Greg Brooks praised Stamps and the work he’s put in. Both players are from around the New Orleans area and have trained with each other for quite some time and Brooks has expected the youngster to make an impact sooner rather than later.

"He's doing great. I expected nothing less of him, working out with him since I was a sophomore and college and he was like a junior, sophomore in high school. I expected nothing less,” Brooks said on Monday.

LSU wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. met with the media on Monday and raved about one play Stamps made during camp. It was a play that’s stood with Hilton throughout the last few days and the Tigers made it a point to bring it up during film.

"Ashton is going to be a very good player. We saw a play in film, I think he was in Cover 2. He rerouted the receiver, then dropped back and then made the pick. That's something you don't see every day from a freshman. He's going to be pretty good,” Hilton said.

There have been a few key plays Stamps has made over the last few days and he seemingly comes up with a pass breakup each and every day. He’s shined when this program has needed a cornerback to emerge and has the chance to take on a major role this season in Death Valley for an LSU secondary looking to hit its stride.

GREAT to hear these types of reports. We'll need guys like Stamps, Welch, and others to step up and contribute at CB (with starters Chestnut & Z. Alexander).
Especially with the lower leg injury to Johnson and the status of D. Harris.
We got this.

Defensive Coordinator Matt House
On LSU's cornerbacks room: "Ashton Stamps has grown up fast."

On what he's seen from LSU's freshmen, including Stamps: "Ashton's a football nut. He's a guy that when you teach him something, he grabs a hold of it."

On what makes Stamps a "football nut": "I'll go ahead and tell you this... the guy came to camp three times to LSU to get a scholarship offer. I think that's all you need to (know) about Ashton Stamps. Like, he wants to be here. He wants to be great. And he's not scared of competition. And sometimes that's not always true right now, right? And he's a dude that embraces competition every day."

He certainly seems like one of those guys "that wants it more".

Is it just my confirmation bias or do a lot of Louisiana recruits seem to be underrated by the recruiting sites? Seems like we always have a good bit of 3 stars that come in and make big impacts and you wonder why they weren't blue chips coming out of HS.

It's no shock to me personally. Idiots on here look at star ratings and think those sites actually know more about scouting than LSU does.

You don't go into LSU camps and dominate blue chips unless you can ball. LSU camps are loaded with high end SEC players. Anytime a player dominates an LSU camp they always end up being a star for us.

BK got one look at this performance in camp and said yeah, I'm personally handing this guy a ship. He will have his growing pains for sure but it will be worth it.

Yes, which is why it's stupid how many people on here criticize but LSU DIDN'T FINISH IN THE TOP 5 IN RECRUITING! In most years, when LSU finishes just outside top 5, their classes tend to be top 5 due to how terrible recruiting sites are at scouting Louisiana. I'd argue they're even bad at giving the well known and high end guys their due.

We don't see subscriptions so they don't commit resources here and LSU tends to be dominated by Louisiana recruits on their recruiting classes. That degrades their overall ranking because they're poorly ranked.

It's always exciting to pull in someone highly touted by the services, but I have not cared as much about the rankings the past year after watching what CBK can do with roster management. That's what it's about.

We have a very good group coming in next year who will contribute early and often too.

Undersized by weight. He's 6'0. Was 170 his Jr year and now is listed at 188lbs.

It’s a fact, and it’s easily explained. Anywhere that has extreme talent density will see its talent underrated. That’s because the mission of the recruiting services is to sell clicks, not to be correct. To sell clicks they have to flatter the big population centers.

Folks on the recruiting board have been talking about Stamps since before he got an LSU offer. Generally, if we get a few OG’s talking up a prospect on there(no matter how they’re rated) that recruit is more often than not, legit.
