This is what happens when you ask about deer hunting with a shotgun on a message board where posters who ask "what deer rifle should I get?" are told they must have $5000 for an elephant rifle with the hubble telescope mounted on top of it to kill a deer inside 200 yards.

Sorry someone hurt your feelings. Many folks on here have advocated for lighter calibers and lower power scopes. Deer aren’t that tough. A 12ga slug is gonna make them plenty dead, but unless you’re going all out shooting sabots it’s probably not going to exit reliably, typically the gun is gonna be long and unwieldy in the tree unless you go out and buy one specially for this, and it’s either gonna kick the everliving shite out of you or weigh 10 lbs. That’s far from ideal to me, but you do you.

The recoil doesn't get enough credit. 12ga slugs and buckshot are absolutely brutal on the shoulder

Who? I hunt deer with .223 and varmint loads. Always have. Had posters swearing up and down I'm going to lose one.

In over 30 years, not one has made it 10ft from where it was shot. I was taught one bullet one deer. Don't take stupid shots.

I was also taught: if you do want to make stupid brush shots, shoot slugs
