Do a self guided freedom trail tour on foot. Download a trail map and take it at your own pace. Don’t do the bus or paid guide if you prefer to take your time at your own points of interest and avoid wasting time at uninteresting spots.
For food, my highlight from my last 2 summer trips has been Neptune Oyster. It’s on, or just right off, the freedom trail. Time your walk to be at Neptune around 11:00 and get in line. It is worth the line if you are there early enough. After 11:30-12:00 it gets really long and you lose any time advantage.
For nighttime dinners, stick to the north end for Italian and dessert at Modern or Mikes bakeries. This should all be within walking or short Ubers to where you’re staying.
