If rankings didn't matter why even keep star rankings? Just recruit 1* and 2* of guys that wanna be here and then develop them.

That is patently false. Most of the time? Sure. But Bama was the most talented team on the field in just about every game they played from 2010 to 2019, and they lost more than ten percent of their games. And that was with the greatest coach ever.
