I've heard the train from Naples to Sorrento can be somewhat unreliable, but I've never done, so that's only what I've heard.

We had a driver pick us up in an 8 person van from Naples and drove us to Masa Lubrense(past Sorrento), and it was about an hour and a half. I think we paid 130 euros. If not, it was close to that. If you take the train, then you have to get to Maiori from Sorrento. Depending on the time of day, that's another probably 2 hours, if not more.

If you get a van from Naples to Maiori you can probably cut off all of the Amalfi drive and save a lot of time. Maybe the idea is to have that drive in, but fwiw, when traffic was bad, it took almost 30 minutes just to get to our place from Sorrento and that was only about 7 miles and toward the end of the peninsula, where it was much quieter.

Just throwing it out there that you could probably cut off a lot of time by driving straight there from Naples.
