Pay them. It’s hard work and fedex is the worst. If my business has to rely on fedex we’ll be in a bind.

UPS is literally among one of the best seasonal and part time employers out there in terms of benefits.
It isn't comparable.

My guess is...
Some of these part timers are in queue for full time jobs.
I.e. the full time pay and benefits are so good that they have a waiting list of future employees.
And the union (being a union... they have to periodically justify their existance) is bullying management for better conditions for these part time/seasonal employees (especially since a large enough percentage are waiting in line and playing low-man for their turn as a full-timer).

But if there were better part time opportunities out there, this wouldn't be a strike. The employees would go elsewhere.

This is just a ploy by the union to make itself useful. If there aren't enough conditions to complain about, sometimes you have to make them up.
