Update from my trip. I took day off from work and drove with my best man to Lockhart and tried Blacks, Smitty and Kreuz BBQ:

We got the Beef Rib and Brisket at Black's. The Beef rib was amazing. Brisket was not good at all.

We stopped at Smitty's and we really enjoyed Smitty's. The huge old style fire room. The pit masters stand in that room with coal burning all the time. It was hot like I'm going to get smoked. We loved their Brisket. The best of all places.

We were pretty full since we had some beers at Smitty's. Smitty's is cash only.

We stopped by Kruez for Brisket to sample. It was not that bad

The 30 min drive was well worth it. Zero wait times. If we have to do it again. We will do the same but skip the Brisket at Blacks

It's good that you had a chance to stop at Smitty's. It's easily my favorite brisket and I don't mind the drive if I am in San Antonio or Austin.

Black's is known for their Beef Ribs. And Kreuz is known for their smoked sausage.

I’ve been to blacks once and I also thought their brisket was nothing special. Smittys is my favorite of the 3 as well. I like the atmosphere there best.
