I used to love NASCAR, grew up watching the Earnhardt, Gordon, Jarrett, Martin, Wallace, Waltrip, etc…

Been to quite a few races including Talladega, Daytona, and Atlanta. Lost some interest during college (and most of the Johnson years thereafter), but still enjoyed casually watching here and there, especially Talladega and Daytona.

The Chase was the first thing that started to turn me off, but I don’t even understand what’s going on anymore when I turn it on. The stages and today I just flipped on qualifying as nothing else was on and I’m seeing this final round qualifying BS. I get the old twin one 125s for Daytona, but seems like too much nonsense these days.

I fear F1 is doing some of this foolishness these days as well with the occasional sprint race.

Anyone else turned off by all the (IMO unnecessary) changes and gimmicks?

Get rid of:

Stages

Competition cautions

Rigid uniformity of vehicle design - there's barely any difference in the vehicles and its essentially all driver and not team/design + driver

Playoffs

I stopped watching after Dale Jr retired, the only exception is watching the Daytona 500. EPL is in full swing and the majority of the games are on Peacock; NASCAR is on too many networks in order to follow cohesively.

NASCAR abandoned their core audience sometime in the mid-late 2000s and started chasing an audience that was never going to watch anyways. They haven't really recovered, IMO.

NASCAR ain’t that bad right now, but it’s never really been all that good. You’re just waxing nostalgic.

NASCAR since the early 1990s has had the goal … some including me would call it the delusion … of becoming not just the No. 1 racing series, but a co-equal major league sport to the NFL, MLB, the NBA and the NHL. I literally heard those words come out of the mouth of one of their marketing people in the press box at Talladega about 1993 or so.

They don’t think they can do that with a fan base of lower to middle class conservative white men from the South and the rural Midwest. It’s that simple. If y’all want to call that “woke,” I guess you can call it “woke.”

Here’s an example of how things have changed. Kyle Busch just put his house on Lake Norman in N.C., which includes a private beach, up for sale for $13 million. Dave Marcis, one of the most respected men in NASCAR, lived in a 14x70 house trailer until 1992.

I won’t claim to be more than a seasonal fan. Used to watch a dozen or so races a year but I just don’t watch more than a couple these days. Besides all the car uniformity BS and stages and playoff confusion, I simply don’t have any interest in the drivers anymore. NASCAR has really dropped the ball on marketing drivers to their loyal fan base instead trying to attract a sector that really doesn’t care long term..

I’ve found I prefer the simplicity of F1 - 20 drivers, 10 teams, driver and constructor with the most points at the end of the season win their respective championship.

In NASCAR, there’s 40+ drivers, 20+ owners, just 3 manufacturers, and for some reason there are two sets of standings for the drivers… a playoff and another standing that I guess doesn’t determine the playoff?

It seems like they could streamline the product.

I’m with you. I’ve been to 20+ races at six or so tracks. And I never missed a race on tv except for a road course race or Pocono. But I was not a fan of the points change and when Gordon retired I pretty much lost all interest in it.

I figured I would still be interested in watching Daytona, Dega, Bristol, Darlington, the Coke 600, etc. but I haven’t watched any of em in years now.

I never watched NASCAR, but it was clear as an outside observer, that the heyday of the late 90s was the sport's zenith. Instead of doubling down and embracing their core fanbase, NASCAR thought it could be something it really could not: a nationwide sport that appealed to a variety of demographics.

It just didn't fit. You have a cote fanbase that feels alienated, and a targeted fanbase that DGAF. Shame, that.

I always have felt like RJ Reynolds being replaced by Nextel as Cup sponsor after the '03 season was when things began to turn. That was when the Chase was first implemented and seemed to be when there began to be much more emphasis on drivers being clean-cut and sponsor friendly (e.g. Jimmie Johnson). IMO it started to become much less organic and more corporate/sterile. It seems like NASCAR has made some attempts to get back to that in recent years, but it seems they have lost too much of that core fanbase and they don't seem to be coming back.

NASCAR went woke and tried to force Bubba Wallace and his fake noose story down our throats. The only time I ever hear about them now is when they do things like that. I couldn’t name but a handful of drivers now.

My first race was the 98 Daytona 500, the one Earnhardt won. I took a vacation to Mooresville to visit all the shops and do tours etc. Talked with Ray Everham when he was walking into work at Handricks one day. Been to 9 different tracks.

Now it's completely laughable. I dgaf if the whole thing folds. It's so stupid.

Me Too

1. They went WOKE with all this Bubba Wallace BS, they were so desperate to include everyone.

2. The drivers now days are a bunch of punks, most of them are 5'8" 150 lbs so it's like a bunch of Jockeys fighting.

No personalities anymore
