I think what a lot of these polls are showing is that Trump has more support in “fly over” states if you will that are going to go red no matter what and Desantis has more support in states like Georgia or Nevada which at this point I don’t think Trump has any chance whatsoever to win no matter what I think or prefer. I could be reading the tea leaves wrong however and Trump will likely still be the nominee.

You got this part right ... which is the crux of the matter.
