Can anyone explain why Washington Parish melons are supposed to be the best?

Everyone knows if you grow a watermelon in Washington Parish, it tastes better. That watermelon grown 5 feet outside of the parish doesn't taste as good!!!

Nah, seriously, it's a marketing urban-legend thing. I love me a Washington Parish because my parents always loved them and I know they are local. But I'm not naive enough to think just because they come from one parish, they are automatically better than the one grown 10 miles away. It's more nostalgia and knowing they are local (which doesn't mean they will taste better).

If you're from west of the Atchafalaya, then sugarland are the best.
