The writing was aggressively stupid, the new characters were awful and the lore that it's based on is a bullshite grift from the 19th century that people either don't know enough about or don't care about, or both. It was also a CGI mess from beginning to end.

Basically, it was Indy and the Ancient Aliens.

The scene where Marion drives a vehicle off a cliff, into the top of a tree, which bends and drops them seamlessly into the river killed me.

Yeah, I think the Ancient Aliens tie-in really hurt. Ancient Aliens guy was already a meme, and the elongated skulls had been debunked and mocked for years.

Surprised they went back to a related well with the Antikythera mechanism, which is popular with the same crowd as Ancient Aliens.

I think it just worked better to tap into old folklore and mythology, or foreign settings, than to draw on stuff that's been exhausted fodder for basic cable and internet message boards for the last 10-15 years.

ETA: correction, I guess Ancient Aliens wasn't on TV yet when the movie came out, I probably waited a while to watch it. And I'd listened to way too much Coast to Coast AM back in the day.
