The Pelicans and Garrett Temple have agreed to extend the deadline on guaranteeing his $5.4 million contract for the 2023-24 season to July 7, sources told ESPN.

The previous deadline was tomorrow.

I assume this is so they can try to trade his salary?

Correct

The moment they pick it up, you know we have a trade lined up, so this gives us an extra weir to shop him.

It works for both sides. He can still get some of his money, and more than likely some sort of buyout if he's traded I'd guess.

Has to be. There's no way that they would guarantee that money for him to sit on the bench, so it would only be if we needed his salary to match in a trade.

Yeah. It says if they don't find a trade he's taking a pay cut to join the staff.

And if they do find a trade, he's probably getting cut and joining the staff.

Looks like the possibility of combining JV+Temple for a rim protector is the potential move.

Does JV and Temple work for Allen?

I see a lot of common sense assumptions in the comments, however I’m afraid this might be another one of those famed “Griff human being synergy” moves and Temple is about to be making $5M again to be a good locker room guy.

They can't frick around anymore and give away money with the new CBA looming. They are now going to have to make really tough decisions and will lose some good players in the process.

No offense but that’s a pretty dumb opinion. There’s no reason to extend the deadline if they were going to give him 5 mill.

There’s only one reason: to find a deal and if they can’t then to shed the salary.

No chance imo

It wasn’t necessarily an opinion. I expressed a simple fear based on the history of Griffin and the human being element that front offices sometimes have a difficult time navigating.

I don’t really see it happening either, bc I think we want to at least clear a potential roster spot for EJ L/have flexibility with a final roster spot.

More importantly per Lopez…

quote:

Pelicans have until tomorrow to pick up or decline the team options on Herb Jones ($1.8m), Naji Marshall ($1.9m) and Willy Hernangomez ($2.6m). Also tomorrow is the deadline for the Pelicans to extend the qualifying offer to Jaxson Hayes.

Tomorrow could be a wild day. Herb extension? Naji and Billy likely gone, but that’s not bad price for Naji. Jaxson qualifying offer is like $6.8m which is perhaps greater than his current worth. I don’t see him staying either.

I don't think there's any chance we don't pick up the Naji option.

Agree, the only way we do not is if we have an extension planned for him. Given our cap, I do not see that as probably. I would think they pick up his option and let Willy and Hayes walk. Herb is the big domino.

Extend Herb, pickup the option for Naji and let the other two walk. That's what makes the most sense.

If you include Liddell and Hawkins we have a current 15 man roster.

The cap space before the tax is at 7.1 mil available before Hawkins/ Liddell contracts. Hawkins is 4.3mil and Liddell will probably be around 2mil.

So we have a 15 man roster with .5mil of space.

Essentially whoever we release/ trade between Billy, Kira, Temple, etcc is how much cap space we have remaining. That’s 13mil

Yes, salaries match. Would we add any picks though?

Why would the Cavs want that?

People seem to be confusing the Cavs thinking they need a better center with they want to dump the one they have for pennies.

This summer is going to be big for Liddell imo.

It was a tiny sample size last year, but I was NOT impressed at all with him.

He looked tiny and unathletic.

I don't think it's a given at all that he's on the active roster.

I actually am much higher on Matkovic than EJ.
