I know it annoys some people, but think about this just a moment... there really shouldn't be any hard-fast rules about where you position your fielders, other than that the pitcher has to pitch from the mound.

This isn't middle-school PE softball, where you might have 30 people in the field. You are limited to 9, one goes behind the plate by necessity to catch the pitches. One goes to the mound and throw pitches. After that, let them do whatever the hell they want to; an extreme shift opens some big holes up on the other side of the infield.

Outfielders on the edge of the infield (sometimes see that in the 9th, guy on 3rd) can take away just about any ground ball hit, but a liner (or even a fly ball) over their heads defeats it.
