I nearly drowned in the waters off Makapu'u Beach in Hawaii in 2016. I got caught in a rip tide and swimming sideways wasn't helping because I was right where the waves were breaking. I was being spun around like I was in a washing machine. Thankfully my friend floated over to me, caught the top of a wave, and I grabbed onto him as he got pushed back toward the shore. Another minute or two and I would have been a goner.
