8 best teams in the country and the worst collection of umpires in the country. How hard is it for 10 days to just send MLB umps to this event??

MLB umps would be worse. There are different rules for college and pro ball. Send dudes that call college games all year but there needs to be some kind of uniform system used throughout the year to determine who the best are.

The players are playing at a far higher level than the umpires.

What an utter embarrassment for these clowns. All week long!

I don’t ever remember it being this bad. I’m not saying it is just asking. Do y’all think it’s gambling muddying the waters if you know what I mean? Things just have seemed off ever since it’s gotten so big.

No, it's not gambling because they are missing calls for both teams. The guys asking for college umps, well that's what these are. Ump last night for Tigers and Demons is a regular college ump every weekend that used to ump in AAA about 10 years ago. I don't know the answer, but this should not be happening

I agree with you completely but……..the on field umps actually got it right. The douchebag sitting at the headquarters felt the need to screw this up by overturning an obvious call.

The guy who called last nights game behind the plate should be given his plane ticket home. If they let him umpire anymore games in the CWS it's a travesty

Believe it or not, they do this currrently.. were just talking ab it during TCU game. Umps are graded through the season and the best make postseason and the best of the best work the CWS

I wonder do they keep conference teams together? Should grade it by team send all of them together. Surely its beneficial to work with the same crew

Generally speaking the college strike zone is larger than the MLB strike zone which it should be in my opinion. You are dealing with a different level of pitcher.

The pitch clocks, the number of mound visits, and the minimum batters faced are three things that are also different just talking about pitchers.

I’m not saying MLB guys can’t do both but why not just use the best guys of the group that do this all year long and take that element completely away. You wouldn’t want NFL refs coming in to do College football games just for the national championship.

The ump last night must have been drunk. That is all I can figure. I could have called a better game....Hell anyone on this board probably could have as well, it was that bad

A big issue is all sports treat referees aa a black box that can do no wrong. If they got called out for doing a bad job by the league I think it would go a long way for fans. But instead we hear silence meaning they think the umps are perfect.

That POS ump behind the plate ladt night is at first in the TCU game today. Just warned TCU runner on first for delay of game for not running back to first after a steal attempt. What a douchebag.

Consider the path of the average umpire who wants to work NCAA games.

They start off with their high school association. From there, they get assigned a bunch of JV, freshmen, middle school, rec and travel ball games to get experience. Then after that they start working varsity games. Then then get noticed or apply to work junior conference and low level NCAA games, and work their way up from there.

Pretty much every HS umpire assignment secretary in the country will tell you he is dealing with a huge shortage of umpires. Over the course of the last 10-15 years, that shortage has made it's way through all levels of amateur baseball, and is has been impacting college baseball for a few years now.

These guys calling the CWS are the best in college baseball. But they are the best of a smaller, and worsening, group.

You also have better and better tech available which makes bad calls more easier to see.

Here's an idea I don't hear a lot about. WHy not have dedicated position umpires in college? Why do we rotate guys? I understand calling the dish is harder than the other positions, but could we find a way to have dedicated plate umps, dedicated 1B umps, 2B umps, 3B umps?

In football, the referee doesn't work as an line judge the next week and a back judge the week after that.
