His momentum is going towards the dugout. He has to stop that, make an accurate throw to 2nd which would be 110-115 feet away, and then a quick turn and accurate throw to 1st. A double play on that ball is nearly impossible

Or he fields the ball backhanded off the hop, plants his foot, has an 85ft throw to 2B.

He only let the ball take him into foul territory so he could create a throwing angle
