What’s the thoughts on the base model line of diesels? XL 250, Custom 2500HD, Etc.

Who has the best one for the money? Who’s got the best longevity?

All 3 ate pretty solid. I have a friend that bought a new Mega Cab Ram 2500 diesel and he's not happy about the rear coil springs. I think the 1 ton has leaf springs.

So imo if you're towing and wanting a 3/4 ton, I'd go Ford or Chevrolet/GMC. I have a Chevrolet High Country diesel 2500 and 2 other friends just bought brand new High Countrys (one 2500 & one 3500). Never had an issue.

Cummins went to roller lifters in the new body style truck. The main appeal there used to be getting a true medium duty engine in a pickup. You are no longer getting a true school bus / dump truck engine in the ram and rather a purpose built pickup truck engine. That's removing the major appeal of the Ram IMO. It might turn out to be fine, but it's still too new to say. The tappet engines, no doubt most reliable. The new ones, we'll find out.

Right now for longevity I would rank them

Chevy
Ford
Ram (unknown)

Ford is STILL using the damn CP4 fuel pump and while the reliability has gone up since the improved filtration was put in in 2019. The CP4 is a deal breaker for me. The rest of the truck is spectacular. Great driveline, great lower-trim options, big arse fuel tank. Nothing to not like about them and if you aren't bothered by the fuel pump, it's the best option.

GM is quietly having great luck with the Denso fuel system and the lack of news about them is a great thing. The 10 speed allison is great. The truck as a whole is good. No reason to avoid them that I'm aware of. If I were in the market today, this is what I'd get.

Any issues you aware of on the 3.0s in the 1/2ton?

I am probably going to bite the bullet and get another truck at the end of the year. Looking at the Titan XD, F150 with the 5.0 or the Ram with 5.7. With all the issues I have had with my last truck. I am hesitant to go GM. However I have heard nothing but good things about the 3.O

No. I dont know hardly anything about them. People have made a stink about the oil pump being inside the sump, but I don't think that would bother me too much.

Out of all your considerations I would probably pick the 5.0 ford. I think they can still be had without any active fuel management crap. The 5.7 hemi has been bad about eating lifters and cams early in life. The diesels are all just too damn expensive IMO.

Roller bearing lifters are used in aircraft engines because of greater reliability ! This is newer technology and I always thought greater reliability ?

I should have been clearer - they are using hydraulic roller lifters now. If I had to guess, the aero engines are probably using solid roller lifters, as is commonly used in very big diesel engines.

It's not necessarily a compromise in reliability as much as it's now an unproven engine. Nearly everything about it is unique to the ram product line, which was not the case with the gen 4 engine.

As to the rest of the truck, they are still using the 68rfe behind the cummins, a pretty anemic 6 speed. The aisin behind the HO in the 1 tons had extremely quality issues in 2021/2022 with snap rings coming loose. The 19/20 trucks had cp4 fuel pumps wrought with failures. The 3/4 tons have abysmal payload numbers.

They really don't have much going for them right now relative to ford and GM who are using great 10 speeds across the board and have proven engines with better capability.

Is this a Cummins design change or a dodge ram change ? Agree on the transmission concerns! Would like to have the Cummins engine with the Allison transmission ! How about that combo ?

Well, cummins built the engine but I imagine Ram drove the change. The previous gen 6.7 was very far behind the rest of the market in NVH. It was way noisier, way shakier, way more diesel-y and needed valve lash adjustments every 150k miles or so.

The new engine is MUCH more refined. It's still a little noisy due to the cp3 fuel pump, but has far less valvetrain noise than the old one. The old one was probably going to top out around 500hp and 1150 ft-lbs of torque in pickup trucks and the new one likely has some improvements to allow it to exceed that as they increase power every year.

Now, for somebody like me all of that is a negligible price to pay for the spectacular reliability and far better serviceability than the other two offerings. I think the late gen 4 cummins are the best diesel pickup engines ever put on the highway. Literally a garbage truck engine in a pickup truck. Bazillions of service hours in many different markets to show for it. The new one might end up being great as well, but it'll be a lot of years before we REALLY know. It's only used in the Ram pickup, so it doesn't benefit from the massive amounts of R&D and reliability data and improvements afforded by operating in literally every single market like the old one did.

Ram really needs to get a very good 10 speed behind the cummins and use it across the board. They're falling far behind with the old 6 speeds. The cummins always had the best fuel economy up till now. I think it's now the worst.

Just not much going for Ram right now in this segment IMO

I'm a Ram fan (in general), but if I'm buying an HD truck today it's gonna be a GM. Besides the mechanical stuff already talked about, Ram desperately needs to update the cab of the 2500. The rear seating and leg room suck compared to a 1500.

But why?

The have an appealing price tag. Outside of that (and i understand that is a massive reason), I don't know why anybody would prefer Ram. I have one, only because it was roughly 10k less than a similar ford or GM truck. It isn't difficult to tell where the cost savings were. It's a far less refined truck.

Besides the look what is the downside on the Titan XD with the 5.6?

After my current truck looks are the last thing I care about. Reliability followed by a ways down performance. I thought the 5.6 with the 8 speed is a reliable package?

Seems to do everything he needs well. And it’s quite

Reliability it my concern with it. Still has a fairly short track record, and it is a GM product and those fricker cam go to hell for the 2014-17 half tons.

I’ve had really good service out of my 17 F250 with the 6.7.
It’s got 155k on it and so far has been flawless. Regular maintenance is key. I use only motorcraft filters and fluids other than oil. That gets rotella 5w40 synthetic. I’ll give it to my son in the next couple years and hope he gets another 150 out of it.

200k miles on my 2012 250 with the 6.7. Other than needing new front wheel bearing last year it’s been rock solid.

I dont know much about those either. If the price is good I wouldn't be scared of it. Their reputation is very good

I notice many of these trucks of higher trim doing recreational duty in tx. See a lot of Ford, ram, gm, in that order. to me the gm has better steering and ride, but I have 6.7 ford.
