Current law requires someone to intend to do harm because of race, color, religion, gender, or national origin to be charged. The package would allow someone to be charged regardless of if there’s another motivating factor as well.

During a second committee hearing on the bills, critics brought up free speech concerns with the legislation, as currently written.

But Arbit-(D) maintains the legislation would hold up in court. He said he partnered with the Attorney General’s office to ensure it. “The Supreme Court has upheld state hate crime laws, time and time again. These bills do not infringe on anyone’s constitutional right,” Arbit said.

DeSantis deserves the comparison. Both laws are the first step to thought policing and people getting arrested for Tweets. Just ask Europe.

I'm honestly amazed at how obvious it was to so many of us years ago when hate crime legislation first came about that it would easily lead to thought crimes and the idea of hate speech.
If the state claims it can prove in court beyond a reasonable doubt that you killed Leroy specifically cause he was black, then, that same state is going to eventually tell you having mean thoughts about Leroy is also a crime.
The state, under no circumstances, should be in the business of trying to mind read.
And no, if, in the process of killing you, I scream the N word, that does not prove I was motivated by your race.
If we've reached the point of violence, people will tend to insult using the most obvious low hanging fruit. If you're 5'5" 300lbs and I'm beating your arse, I'm probably gonna call you a fat frick in the process. That doesn't prove I beat your arse cause you're fat.

Literally every thinking conservative was screaming exactly this when hate crime laws were very first gaining popularity.
Make no mistake. Liberals knew exactly where it was going to lead.
