How would you handle the pitching for Omaha?

We are back to essentially a regional format, 3 wins in a row gets you to the championship series. Our side of the bracket has Wake Forest, UTe/USM, and UTw/Stanford.

Dating back to 2015, there has only been 1 team (Oregon St.) that has advanced to the championship series when losing their game 1 in Omaha.

The way Jay has handled Skenes, I fully expect him to go game 1. I think game 2 will be handled in the same fashion as this weekend, Floyd with a shorter leash. If Thatcher isn't used in game 2, he'll go game 3. If Thatcher is utilized, Jay will go with Coleman as stated in his post game last night. I think Money would be utilized to start an if needed game 4 scenario.

Game 1 - Skenes
Game 2 - Floyd
Game 3 - Hurd/Coleman (pending Hurds use in game 2)

Hopefully we can stay in the winners bracket. I don't think we have the pitching to navigate the losers bracket.

Wow you really went out on a limb here. Do the lineup prediction next.

I may be in the minority but I want Hurd starting game 2. He’s been pitching great lately and he’ll be fully rested.

With Wake Forest waiting for us in round 2, it’s tempting to consider using Skenes. If Southern Miss beats Tennessee it would definitely become an option on the table.

You likely nailed it, makes sense for the schedule to use Skenes game 1.

I’d be lying though if I admitted it’s not too bad that we’ll miss out on Skenes vs Wake Forest in Omaha. With as great an offense as they’ve had all year, that’d genuinely be one of the most intriguing matchups in recent memory.

Oh well, rather see him in the championship series like normal.

I think Money gets some innings. Big ball park. Balls do not jump in there and Money has issues but throwing strikes is not one.

LSU does not have the luxury of a deep starting rotation to be able to hold the ace for game two. Pitch Skenes in an attempt to win early. Let Floyd and Hurd carry their load. Bats get/stay hot and we ride.

My thoughts?

Every team in Omaha is fricking good.

Go Skenes game 1. After that then and only then can we try and get cute.

The whole "save Skenes for Wake crowd" will be in for a rude awakening if LSU loses game 1 and we don't see them.

How are we supposed to answer this without knowing the weather???

In all seriousness, you plan to stick with the same weekend rotation. As you alluded to, the only exception would be if you need to pull Floyd early and you have to put Hurd into Game 2.

Skenes
TBD
TBD

Wake has to win game 1, too. They didn't get a bye. I would not be shocked if Wake opened 0-1.

You pitch Skenes in the first game for one reason. You want him to pitch twice.

If you wait until the second game, you might be pitching Ty Floyd twice and get eliminated before you can get Skene's in again. You want Skenes pitching Saturday and then again on Wednesday.

That is 100% the setup. The only additional option might be Cooper gets the start (if Hurd is used in game 1 or 2) and bridge the gap with all the lefties.

Don't pitch Skenes the entire tournament. Save him for his pro career.

I think it's pretty simple until you get to the "if necessary" game on Thursday. If LSU is in that one, it will be very tempting to throw Skenes and get into the championship series Sat/Sun/Mon. That may come down to whether it's LSU's 4th or 5th game. If 5th, you probably have to throw Skenes because there may not be anyone left. If 4th, you may hold him and hope he gets to pitch game 1 Saturday. Best case just win 3 games and make it easy!

Best Case:
Saturday - Skenes
Monday - Floyd/Hurd
Wednesday - Cooper/Coleman

Saturday - Skenes
Sunday - Floyd/Hurd

Loser's Bracket:
Saturday - Skenes
Monday - Floyd/Hurd
Tuesday - Cooper/Coleman
Wednesday - Herring/Ackenhausen/Guidry
Thursday - Skenes/Money

Saturday - Floyd
Sunday - Hurd
Monday - Cooper/Coleman
