I think Clinton won re-election in '96 legitimately.
Newt Gingrich got Clinton RE-elected.
I don't even mean that as a slam on Gingrich. It was, what it was, though.
Maybe that's why congressional republicans no longer really do ANYTHING, but I still appreciate Newt and his vision at the time.

After Watergate, no Republican was going to win in 76

quote:While it is possible for the Republicans to be cheating, one party controlling two senate seats is not the same as having one party control of local governments for 60+ years while things in those localities get worse and worse and worse. If things for Kansas are getting worse every year (since the senators look out for the state), I'd agree that the Republicans were cheating.
Republicans are cheating in Kansas, where they have held the two Senate seats for over 80 years?

I now have serious doubts. Same with a lot of Senate and Rep seats.

Ford came close, and lost by very thin margins in Ohio and Wisconsin. Had he won those states, he would've beaten Carter.

He did come close. Any other year, he would have won.

Hell, Reagan nearly beat him in the primary. It would be have interesting to have seen what he would have done in the general, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise that he didn't get there in '76.

We needed Carter to get the full impact of Reagan.

quote:there were no traditional Republican states in the south in 1976. With the notable exception of Nixon (who won the South based on anti-Red bona fides), the Old South been voting Democrat in presidential elections for a century.
Jimmy Carter swung a lot of traditional GOP states in the south because he was from the south.
Hell, they voted against Eisenhower.

Only 25% of registered voters identify as Republican (published in 2020). 32% Democrats and 41% independent.
