all the pundits keep mentioning this, saying discovery was going to be bad for both sides. I wonder what they were worried about.

The DP battle was simply about the players paying fines. It meant nothing to the overall war of attrition. Literally no one has mentioned that court case as a reason for this deal taking place except for Rory today. It sounds like he was lied to as for the reasoning that Jay wanted to start talks. Every other person who has commented has said that the PGA had to make a move. The PIF had the upper hand.

I don't think either side wanted to go through the discovery of this case. Both would come out looking bad publicly. The PIF could also bleed the PGA Tour dry in the litigation with much deeper pockets and it would have lasted years. Settling the litigation side of things was probably in both parties' best interests long-term.
