When is the best time to book to get the best rate? Months ahead? Weeks? Day of?

Depends on how in demand the time/place you are picking is. Book a refundable room early and keep checking back.

Book a refundable rate as early as possible. As occupancy decreases rates will increase but it's possible that they may run a sale or special after you've initially booked so a lower rate may be possible.

My wife is a GM of a hotel in one of the major chains. She always says to NEVER book through a third party(Expedia,Booking). Book directly with the hotel. They are seriously handcuffed when you have problems with refunds, reservations and other thing when you go with a third party.

Book a refundable rate early and then set up an alert with Hotelslash to monitor the price. (Same with car rentals and Autoslash.)
