Travel around a bit and see how behind our state is in EVERYTHING. Corrupt politicians, harsh business environment, high taxes, insurance, etc. This state is going backwards.

When you live in Houston and go home to visit, Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and a few rural parishes...It feels like I went back in time by about 30 years. It felt like 20 years, 10 years ago. In that 10 years, nothing has changed in Louisiana. It's so backwards.

Shitehole state run by corrupt white religious nationalist can’t keep good employees in state????? I’m shocked!!

And our two most populated cities are ran by black supremacists and are two of the most murderous cities in the country.

Weve got the best of both worlds.

I headed for Dallas as soon as graduation was over and never once has the thought crossed my mind of moving back to Louisiana

We tried. My hubby got laid off in the busts in the 80s and we came back to Shreveport from Texas. We were there 6 years. We loved it. We loved our church, our friends, our family, everything. But there just were not jobs with any opportunity at all. We moved to Dallas in 1989 and have been in Texas ever since. Things were much better for our children being raised in Texas.

From the article:

Still, Louisiana ranks 17th nationally–higher than might have been expected–in attracting and keeping college graduates.

Name some of the other good lists where Louisiana ranks in the top 20. The massive outmigration of college graduates is a mythical narrative, at least relative to the majority of the country.

I'm one of those. I gave Louisiana all the chance I could, but let's all be honest... It's not a state meant for medium to high achievers. The bigger cities obviously punish anyone who is successful attempting to cater to the garbage.

Same here. I just left BR for Nashville a few weeks ago.

Shite, my Dad sometimes tells me how hard it was to get a decent job in Pineville in 1960. Those were grim times in CENLA.
And for what I am told it is still very grim in Ellick in 2023.

Louisiana isn’t diverse?

I ended up going the Big 4 consulting route straight out of school and my group didn't have an office anywhere in the state.

Brother and SIL ended up in Shreveport while she went to grad school and bought a house there. Parents are retired and split time between Shreveport and North Carolina. If it wasn't for bro and SIL they would probably be gone from Shreveport too

Why would you stay in LA? This has been going on for decades. I did it in 2006. Got the heck out as soon as I could.

Agreed. The problem isn't that they are backwards its that they are ok with it. Ive never seen people just be ok with mediocrity full well knowing there is a better way.

If my job ask me to relocate to Texas, I’ll have my family packed up and ready to roll out before they finish the sentence.

Y’all act like other states don’t deal with this also. Y’all ever been to Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, South Carolina, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico? Not a damn thing is going on in those states, Louisiana just happens to live 5 hours from Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and 4 hours from Houston. Texas is just the land of jobs, so of course people are quick to move, those sectors prey on new graduates, once time passes, it’ll level itself out, because commuting 2 hours a day gets real old, real fast. All these kids from Louisiana are moving into apartments downtown and close to their jobs, so of course life is great for them, once they settle down, start a family and move to the suburbs, they’ll learn real fast how miserable Texas can get. I’m not saying Texas isn’t lightyears better than Louisiana, but it definitely has its flaws.

Not sure how to turn this tide.

easy... make it to where you have to fully repay TOPS every dollar you were awarded, if you accept it, and go out of state after graduation within 4 years of graduating...

perhaps some of these newly smart kids can, i dunno, become entrepreneurs... hell, if we had implemented this FROM THE BEGINNING, perhaps we would have more of these jobs you talk about...

and look, if there's absolutely NOTHING in your given field of study, and you are forced to go out of state, maybe only repay 1/4 or 1/2, or some arrangements can be made, but that's not the case for a LARGE number of the students that we are talking about... very much the exception, not the norm

This is dumb. Coming out of LSU, I could make 50k in LA or I could make 78k living in Texas.

6+ years later my position in Louisiana hires at 75-100k. I make almost twice that in Texas. I also never have to worry about my company relocating or my work running dry. Its not just IF there are jobs, it's how much those jobs pay.

LA has done a great job attracting the industrial sector. We need tech, finance, and to continue pushing medical.

I’ll also add that while I can’t speak for all of the state, it seems like everyone I know who left the NOLA metro after college has for the most part returned home after a few years.

We can turn this state around, we’ve just gotta start now.
