I've always thought that " Private Investigations" and "On Every Street", are intersecting songs.
Same situation, from different points of view.
One of the best opening lines of any song, is in "On Every Street".
The line is : Somewhere your fingerprints remain complete.

The live versions of So far away where it starts with the mandolin playing acoustic are sick.

Yeah their first 2 albums are hard to beat. They hold up really well today. Six Blade Knife is my favorite song. Their sound changed a little with Making Movies but is a damn good album.

Brothers in Arms and Romeo and Juliet

My favorite part is him talking about his Dad, who wasn't a player, but supported the shite out of him. And that makes think of that thing with Jimmy Nails, This Is A Big River.

I dug out that David Knopfler cassette. It's from 1983, titled "Release".
His voice is a lot like Mark's.
David wrote or co-wrote all the songs.
Sounds very Dire Straitish, like cuts that were never released.

I couldn't possibly name a favorite Dire Straits song because there are too many, but I submit "It Never Rains" as an overlooked gem.

Brothers In Arms is the sell out album but glad they got paid

You know what they say, the first cut is the deepest.
But Down by the Waterline is a great song

I really have a hard time picking.
I would probably go with Sultans of Swing, only because it was the first of their songs I heard and I remember just being mesmerized by the sound of Mark Knopfler's guitar. I had never heard anything that sounded quite like it before. That was my junior year in high school.
Contenders in no particular order:
Romeo and Juliet
Skate Away
Brothers in Arms
Down by the Waterline
Walk of Life
Money for Nothing
So Far Away
Six Blade Knife
Lady Writer
I like most of their songs quite a lot

We're about the same age, and hearing Sultans of Swing in the radio was so damn cool

You know they played at the LSU Student Union Theater in November 1980. LSU students got first shot at the tickets. Sixth-row seats, it is probably my favorite concert ever.
ETA: My freshman year in college.
