Have to be honest, would have though the Mediterranean was larger compared to the lower 48 than that.

Same. This doesn't feel right, but I did a quick wiki search and the US (total, including Alaska) has an area of about 3.8M square miles. The Med is about 1M square miles. So it's certainly plausible.

think about the current cities that were at one point located in their Empire-

Istanbul, Jerusalem, Damascus, Cairo, Athens, Vienna, Prague, Zurich, Venice, Rome, Paris, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon...

Think about what it took to maintain their excellent road network between important places.

For shipping, there were support cities one day's "sail" apart.

Based on archeological finds, the trading empire of Rome was much larger. And slavery was a part of all of it.

What I thought was far more interesting was that fake map supposedly showing what the US would look like as a result of climate change, which was really just showed the Mediterranean Sea being implanted into the middle of the US. And some people seriously fell for it.

I was never under the impression the Med was real big. Los Angeles to Atlanta seems about right

I think that there are some very apt analogies. What are the dumb ones in your estimation?

I blame Larry Leo for this.
