Yup.

Grandfather did. Was always an afternoon drinker, mix one on the way home from the farm, take a pint of Old Charter to the deer stand in the afternoon. But he got to where it was nipping all day every day after he retired. Just slowly got sloppier and sloppier. Fell one day and was in a coma for a month. Got well enough to go home, but was not right mentally anymore. The whole deal was like a trigger for dementia and Parkinson’s at the same time. He died about 3 or 4 months later.

Wife’s mother died after years of alcoholism. My wife (fiance’ at the time) had done it all to try to help and finally just had to wash her hands of it. So they were estranged, but they found her on our wedding day. It was weird. My wife was like well okay, it’s sad and I’m not surprised, but we’re not calling this off. Personally, I’ve always wondered if it was suicide out of spite.

Wife’s aunt is headed down that path. Weird deal. Very well off, owns a lot of desirable real estate, but can’t quit. Been in rehab probably 6 times in 2 years. In rehab currently.

Know a guy that lives near me that can’t get sober long enough to get on a liver transplant list. Has a wife and 3 kids under 10.
