Back in the 90s I worked with a guy who was on a level of alcoholism I didn’t even know existed. You could literally smell alcohol coming from his pores. By lunchtime he’d have the shakes. But the end of the day he looked like he had Parkinson’s. He’d leave work and go straight to the ABC store and buy 4 or 5 mini vodkas. You’d think someone who was that bad of a drunk would drink half a gallon per night. But he’d got to the point he’d all but pickled himself. He literally could only drink a few miniatures and it would get him blackout drunk.
He eventually came to work too drunk and they fired him. He ended up living in a roach motel on 1st Ave. North in Bham. He died in his room and no one knew he was dead until they started smelling him after a few days.
He was a sad story. He was a nice guy. His life went off the rails when one day he came home from work and found his wife packing up everything they owned, including their kids, in a U-Haul. She was being helped by her new boyfriend, who she told him was moving with her and the kids out of state and that he’d never she her or the kids again. He never got over that and it ended up killing him.
