It was a compromise 20 years ago, MLK Day became a state holiday to balance out Confederate Memorial Day also being a state holiday in SC

I lived in AL for 2.5 years abotu a decade ago and the last 2 years currently and have never heard of htis. For being an official state holiday they sure don't mention it
