Yet we rank #5 in hits allowed per 9 innings and #3 in Ks per 9. Walks can kill! Hard to blame the SEC strike zone when Tennessee and S Carolina rank #4 and #11, respectively, in walks per 9.

Not sure many people are blaming the small strike zone for us walking many more than other teams. Having said that, i think the strike zone is entirely too small across the board which leads to walks being up and everyone scoring more runs

That’s what was killing me yesterday - after the first couple of walks just throw a meatball in the zone. Even line drives are caught a lot.

Yesterdays pitches weren’t even close to the strike zone in the 1st inning.

Analytics are the problem with pitching. Only Skenes throwing strikes, because of analytics the other pitchers are being forced to throw pitches the analytics say they should throw instead of throwing strikes. How much worse could it be.

Walks 2022 1,720 at end of season, 2023. With two weekends left we now have 1,620 walks.

Runs at end of season, 2022 2,538. Right now we already have 2,192 runs scored.

Tell that to the football fans that think the best pitching coach in college baseball just fell off the banana truck.

The problem I have is that walks are like a venereal disease with this staff. They just keep passing them off to the next guy that comes into the game. You use five pitchers and it’s understandable one guy has an off day and can’t find the plate, maybe two guys. But all of them suffer from not finding the strike zone.

Something is not right with either their mental preparation, their mechanics, the pitch selection, or the talent, or a combination of these things. Regardless, it’s Wes Johnson’s job to fix it. And so far, he has not been able to.

What about the rest of the SEC? Would probably provide more context to your point.

I think it's priorities when it comes to LSU and pitching, and aside from Skenes, it seems like an afterthought. This team was definitely engineered to outscore opponents, and when that doesn't happen it puts stress on a Staff that hardly resembles SEC quality at times. It bit them in the arse at Hattiesburg at an inopportune time.

LSU gave up 220 walks last season. 3.55 per game

LSU has already given up 190 walks this season. 4.04 per game

LSU played 62 games last season. LSU is on pace for 250 walks through 62 games.. 30 more than last season.

Yeah that’s ridiculous. Imagine if coach made each pitcher that has a walk the previous week do suicides. You’d have guys puking from all the running lol

I haven't gone back to look, but my recollection was LSU's pitching performed pretty well overall in limiting walks pre-SEC.

SEC play is where the zone shrank.

After Skenes, we should just let the opponenet hit the ball.....we at least have a chance to make a play.

Throw strikes and play defense.

All that is fine and well until the pitcher can actually change speeds and keep it in the zone to keep hitters off balance.

This thread is about LsU pitching.

Perhaps we should try more offspeed pitches and less fastball. Right now, it seems like we are throwing 70% offspeed. Got to pump those swing and miss numbers up! Let’s throw 80% offspeed.

And there is the problem... what are the coaches doing to remedy the awful problem, especially the new pitching coach??? He seems to have created and/or exacerbated the situation???

Bring on the laser tech strike zone for fairness and consistency. Too many virtually identical pitches are called differently.

Would've been a solid thread if you had mentioned that lsu is 5th in the SEC in walk per 9 innings

But that would've countered your point

SEC Opponent batting averages against our guys:

Skenes: .196
Floyd: .231
Collins: .211
Guidry: .222
Money: .238
Ack: .350
Cooper: .304
Herring: .293
Dutton: .429
Coleman: .158
Little: .250
Hurd: .349
Hellmers: .250
Bucknam: .500

Many of these are respectable numbers, but pretty small sample sizes. So letting most of them get work isn’t a bad idea in the short term, gives us a better picture of who will perform best in the postseason.

WALKS per 9
Skenes- SEC: 1.68 BB/9 Non: 1.5 BB/9

Rest of staff- SEC: 6.28 BB/9 Non: 4.19 BB/9
