Sudan crisis: WHO warns of biological hazard at seized lab

quote:

The World Health Organization (WHO) says there's a "high risk of biological hazard" at a laboratory caught up in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

quote:

Officials said that a broad range of biological and chemical materials are stored in the lab. The facility holds measles and cholera pathogens, as well as other hazardous materials.

World Sudan fighting brings "huge biological risk" as lab holding samples of deadly diseases occupied, WHO warns

quote:

He pointed out that the lab held so-called isolates, or samples, of a range of deadly diseases, including measles, polio and cholera.

Can this planet suck any more at this point?

Well, if it were somehow contained to that continent... However, I am certain that is not how it would play out...

Sounds like a valid excuse for a land invasion to secure the weapons of mass destruction- I mean biological weapons labs.

We should ask China if they want us to do the same in Ukraine.

WHO =s Fauci funded lab most likely

Who trusts the WHO?

Blow that fricking lab up

It’ll be one less to deal with and blowing it up will save lives

Always do the opposite of what WHO suggests and you’ll live a nice loooong life ;-)

Well, most places have regulations concerning what can and cannot be done in labs... Unstable places, not so much...

There are lots of different types of bio labs, for example when you visit the doctor and have blood drawn, it goes to a "bio lab" for analysis.

Vision:
Access to a healthy and productive society, enjoying comprehensive, continuous, health care and diagnostic services that meet its needs and are available to it fairly.

the message:
Achieving the largest possible number of diagnostic tests in accordance with quality and safety standards.

Summary of the general objectives of the National Public Health Laboratory:
- Setting standards for medical laboratories in the country.
– Contribute to building the capacity of the states and localities to play their role in the following medical laboratories.
- Providing the database for medical laboratory programs, conducting research and documentation, and following up the implementation of quality levels and standards.

Functions of the National Public Health Laboratory:
- Implementation of the Ministry's policy of making laboratory diagnosis a center of its strategy in the coming years.
- Develop policies, legislation and strategies for medical laboratories
- Contribute to the promotion and development of the performance of medical laboratory workers, in their various specializations.
- Coordination with national authorities and relevant supporting organizations.
- Providing the database for medical laboratory services and conducting national research and documentation.

The administrative structure
The laboratory is currently affiliated with the General Administration of Basic Health Care after it was part of the Department of Preparedness and Response to Epidemics.

The structure consists of departments and epidemiological, diagnostic and control units, and a descriptive structure that includes the director and heads of departments and units in addition to the administrative director, financial director, and personnel affairs.

It also includes the laboratory department with its affiliated departments such as some reference laboratories related to the control of some diseases such as polio, measles, tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS.

Tasks and services at the National Public Health Laboratory
The public health laboratory is specialized in providing laboratory services (diagnostic - control) and in the preventive medicine aspect to investigate epidemics, and it is considered the only reference laboratory in Sudan. Where he does the following:

- Setting policies, standards, protocols, and directives, and writing standard practical procedures for laboratory diagnosis for all laboratories in Sudan, ensuring follow-up and adherence to the application of practical specifications and standard methods, and promoting the services of governmental and private laboratories.
- Participate in the development and implementation of strategic and annual plans for state health laboratories and health unit laboratories.
- Conducting rare examinations and specialized analyzes of pathological infection in the fields of laboratory and epidemiological diagnosis or assisting in conducting them (in cooperation with other centers - the World Health Organization).
- Conducting laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis of diseases, including alerting to the presence of epidemic diseases, responding, and monitoring the safety of water and food.
- Enhancing the ability to respond and address epidemic diseases through rapid examination of samples and identification of pathogens, and ensuring the availability of capacity for laboratory diagnosis of a large number of samples if the need arises (in case of emergency).
- The laboratory assists in diagnosis (in cases of epidemic outbreaks) in order to identify the source of infection: identifying the healthy disease carrier, identifying the storage hosts, monitoring the epidemiological pattern, analyzing and sharing laboratory information.
- Send isolated laboratory samples (safe shipment) to international reference laboratories.
- Participate in the work of the epidemic investigation and disease monitoring system in coordination with the Epidemiology Department.
- Participate in rapid intervention teams in cases of epidemics and medical emergencies.
- Follow-up and identification of antimicrobial resistance to treated drugs.
- Providing technical support to regional and state health laboratories.

- Coordinating and encouraging the implementation of quality control programs for medical laboratories and environmental laboratories, including training on quality, providing advice, and conducting proficiency tests.
- Collect, analyze and share data (information) within the laboratory network - with the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and other partners.
- Publishing, printing and distribution (paper / electronic) of laboratory scientific bulletins, training materials, guides and guidelines, in addition to survey reports for all stakeholders.
- Building a system for laboratory research and surveys.
Establishing a national system for laboratory supply management and central inventory.

Are you actually asking why the government of Sudan would have a public health laboratory?
