Just crossed old bridge from Port Allen to Baton Rouge. As a kid 30-40 years ago, everything on the BR side of bridge was coated with an orange dusting. What was that?

That was from Bauxite. Kaiser Aluminum had a refinery located right there. Bauxite is the orangish colored dirt that contains a high % of alumina which is extracted to produce aluminum.

Agent Orange baw. Little known fact, BR had a NVA issue in the early 80's.

this ^^^^^^

and that dust gets crusty hard almost like concrete too.

my uncle used to work at kaiser aluminum and he had to run the sprinkler on his truck for at least an hour to soften it up enough to be able to wash his truck. and when he was done it still had a dull finish. most who worked there had a separate work vehicle just to drive to work, because they got so trashed, inside and out, with that damn dust

Didn’t they sell out to Discovery Aluminus then to Alcoa?

Dad worked at a chemical plant in Lake Chuck in the 70’s and 80’s. Had a car wash on the exit of the office building. If it was bad for your car I’m sure it was great to breath in every day.
