Looking to attract birds to my property with American beautyberry. Has anyone successfully propagated this plant from cuttings, or did you buy established plants from a nursery?

Nice plant - bought mine at a wholesale nursery as 1 gallon container plants several years ago - probably 6 to 8 ft tall now; never tried to propagate but should be easy to do according to this article (end of article). LINK

Thanks! Have been interested since I saw it a few years ago in the Couturie Forest @ City Park.

Local nursery? I'm in NO, but willing to travel to BTR and surrounding area.

No I bought mine at Doug Young Wholesale Nursery in Forest Hill - I deer and Turkey hunt in that area.
But being a Louisiana Super Plant, the larger retail garden centers in NO should carry them. Others can suggest the better retail garden centers in the NO area. I’m pretty sure Cleggs Garden Centers in BR carry them - I’ve seen them there.
Don’t hesitate to ask a manager of a larger retail garden center to order them for you if they don’t carry them - their wholesaler suppliers that make weekly deliveries to the garden centers will put them on the truck for you.

I never knew that was what this was called. Not what we call em out in the woods, which I cant recall right now, but it aint beautyberry.

This is growing in the tree line on the back of my property that I’m building on. Plenty of deer tracks back there so I’m looking forward to morning coffee once the house is finished.

Probably calling it French mulberry

I find it attracts more birds in late fall/winter. The purple berries are nice addition to color in the yard. They aren’t the prettiest bushes for landscaping so I always tucked them away in the corner. You can get young trees pretty cheap from the annual tree sale put in by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Just googled it and it isnt as inaccuate as I thought. I just assumed it was something we called it completely off base.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I've read that the beautyberries can be used to make wine. When I was little, my grandmere would talk about her dad making wine from French mulberries.

Beautyberry and many other Louisiana native plants will be on sale at Hilltop Arboretum in BTR.

Can also try the pelican greenhouse in city park. I’ve seen them there. After Pelican, Harold’s is the other nursery that might have it.

There is a guy in Lafayette that has many small beauty berry plants for sale. Few bucks each. From cuttings. I think they were purple not white. Let me know if you want his info and I will find it.

Thanks! I'm going to check with two nurseries here in NOLA. I would have gone with Pelican Greenhouse, which is only a mile and a half from me. Unfortunately, their next sale is not until 5/12. I'd really like to get these in sooner than that. Gonna ping this thread/you Thursday if I need those ABBs from your guy.
ETA: I'm up for purple or magenta. Trying to avoid white.

Probably thinking of The Urban Naturalist. Marcus is a good dude, and great plants, too. Easy to find on Facebook.
