You all are wrong, google a sitcom named “Soap”. One of the characters had anxiety issues and his safe place was when he became invisible. He used this gesture to become invisible. Late 1970’s I think.

Don't agree. OP asked what it meant, not when it was 1st done. I don't think D Byrd needed to go to his 'safe place'
