Country music at its purest. Yet he could be catchy pop sounding, old school or Western swing. He pulled it all off.

And trucking songs like "Movin' On".

Jones was a legendary alcoholic and was addicted to amphetamines.

Haggard was a smoker, a drinker, a heavy pot smoker and he bought $2,000 worth of cocaine in 1983. Then he was heavy in the cocaine use and partied for five months.

He must have been great at finding bargains too.

Dude, just Google "George Jones cocaine use". While you're at it go ahead and Google "George Jones DeeDoodle and the Old Man". Then for fun Google "George Jones attempted murder Peanut Montgomery". When you're done with that Google "George Jones asylum".

Even Waylon Jennings thought George Jones did a lot of cocaine.

It's seriously not even close.

Probably my favorite Hag song of all time. Used to play it on the jukebox at the Happy Note every time I went in the place.

I think "Sing Me Back Home" is my favorite Hag song, but picking a favorite is like picking which one of my kids I like better. Big City, Lonesome Fugitive, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Star, It's Been a Great Afternoon, just so many.

Merle is top for me out of any musician, band, genre...etc. They just really don't make em like him any longer. Merle was just the best. Could play a decent lead when he had to, rhythm, and even saw on a fiddle every now and then. Plus was one hell of a songwriter along with having one of the best voices in music history. Some of my earliest memories are listening to Merle with my Dad and Grandfather.

Top 3 Merle songs for me:
Merle Haggard - Carolyn

Merle Haggard - If We Make It Through December

Merle Haggard - Kern River

This song with Clint Eastwood always cracked me up. Drank a few cold ones to this one over the years:

Merle Haggard w/ Clint Eastwood - Bar Room Buddies

On another note, I literally cringe every time I hear one of these new country artists cite Merle as an influence. No fricking way he could influence any of the shite they release.

How good was he

It's a toss up on whether he or George Jones was tGOAT of Country Music.

I personally lean towards The Hag due to his songwriting chops, but like someone said earlier it's subjective.

He was great.

Some of his songs have a heavy use of the saxophone.

Quite a few of the old (REAL) country artists back then had that as a staple. Hank Jr., Ronnie Millsap, Kenny Rogers, etc.

They just do that because it's the trendy thing to say these days.

lol yup, and they only started doing THAT because it became TOO trendy to cite Cash as an influence.

(well that, and the fact that Cash isnt really country anyways)

so is Elvis Presley, i dont think anyone will tell you that he is a famous country singer.

and oh by the way, for you songwriter purists - Cash also straight up STOLE the biggest song he "wrote". seriously, go google "Crescent City Blues" and see if it sounds a little familiar.

One of the greats. He died 7 years ago today.

I spent today listening. That’s The Way Love Goes is my current earworm. Not a bad thing.
