I made snare my Freshman year, along with a few others. One of the former year's snare drummers didn't make it and was put on cymbals instead.
I wouldn't say it was overly difficult. I was certainly no prodigy or anything. I learned the book front to back. Could play all the cadences with the CD. I put in about two weeks work of 3 hours a day on it I'd say.

That makes zero sense
Contrary to what people on the drumline may say, they're just another section in the band.
