Does anyone know if I can get a data only plan on an old iPhone? Do any companies sell data only plans for phones? I guess I’d have to switch the SIM cards?

About 97% of places I walk into have public wifi so just food for thought.

Thanks for your illuminating reply. Did you consider that I plan to go to the 3% of places that don’t have public WiFi?

I'm not saying not to find a data plan but the bright side is wifi is still available. Also you can hotspot off another phone unless you are going off the grid alone.

Mint and T-Mobile both sell SIMs designed for tablets. All of the majors seem to, but just go to your preferred carrier and look for tablets or devices.

ETA: Caveat, I don't know how old the phone is, but make sure to check if it accepts e-SIMs or not, that is going to limit your options if you can't use an e-SIM.

ETA2: I know the Mint page is for "phones" but they're an example how how you can even get voice you're not going to use. Voice and SMS are so low value to carriers these days it's kind of a throw away (except for international.)

Any idea how much data you're looking for? They sell pre-pay no contract SIMs for trail cams and things like that.

Part of that is each device still requires a phone number to access the network. You can have a data only plan, but they still have to give you a new cellular number to go with the plan. I can remember using a prepaid hotspot and being able to log in to the settings and saw a page for sending and receiving text messages using the hotspot’s number.

Google Fi gives you an extra sim card that you can put in another device for data. Or at least they did back when.

Usmobile - pooled data plan

$9 a month per device
$2 per GB with same price top ups if you push your monthly allotment

Requires Verizon capable device for pooled data though.

I put visible on an old iPhone. 25 a month for unlimited talk and data. Service was surprisingly good.
