Why are Republicans weak?

Seems Democrats are willing to go for the throat on issues while Republicans pussyfoot around it not wanting to hurt feelings. Why is that? Is this the reason they've been losing?

The nature of conservatism is attempting to maintain a status quo, and the nature of liberalism is change for the sake of it.
Republicans are weak because all they have to do is stand their ground against a still-degrading status quo. They don't actually have to DO anything.
