Forgot to add - get some decent over the ear headphones for sure. You’ll be amazed how soon you’ll be able to tell nuances in the tones. They block out background noise and discourage people from coming up to talk to you. One caveat is to be aware of what’s behind you if you’re anywhere near a sketchy neighborhood.
