Yeah, that was my thought, too. It sounds like a cop-out for bad parents, but the simple fact is I didn't listen to a damned thing my parents told me. I guess I turned out OK. My neighbors would say so.
My oldest didn't listen to a damned thing I said, and she's a college graduate with a full-time job- something in software.
The rest of them aren't grown yet, but I imagine they'll turn out mostly the same way. It's how people in my family turn out.
There may have been a few extraordinary people among us, in either direction, but by and large I think genetics is far more important than what your mom / dad / schools say or do to you. And you probably know your genetics, and your wife's.

I will also add:
It is HIGHLY possible for bad parents to take a good seed and ruin it.
It is damned near impossible to take a bad seed and mold it into the paragon of virtue and performance that you might want.

Two girls, two years apart and as different as they can be.
Both have their own homes, careers, families but one is more needy than the other. They've both produced some amazing children though.
