I have zero trees in my backyard and am wanting to plant some trees along the back fence to break up the monotony/ have a bit of privacy.
My wife wants some sort of holly so Im wondering what variety will grow fastest down here and be the least amount of maintenance. Im open to suggestions outside of hollies as well

We have several Hollies, they’re pretty but they have to be pruned/trimmed like hedges.
Also have 8-10 camellias and pruning is kinda optional, depending on how tall you want to let them get.Where ours are we don’t prune them and they’re not excessively tall.
There are lots of varieties with different color flowers.
All and all,I prefer camellias

I have 16 savannah hollies around my back yard. They are perfect for my needs. I prune the yard side maybe 1-2x per year to keep more yard space but I don't have to. They dont drop many leaves but do drop berries. Mine drop into my asian jasmine ground cover underneath which is much more maintenance.

We just planted 20 carolina sapphire cypress trees along our back fence.
I wanted blue ice cypress but couldn’t find any. These grow fuller in middle and have a beautiful color.
We lost about 9 Carolina sapphire cypress early, but now they are rooted they are doing well. Only starting year 2 though.

Look into Cleyera Japonica, fast growing, less maintenance. Cut/trim anytime. Hit them with a Fertilizer and Ironite.

I planted a line of Nellie Steven’s Hollie’s in 2013-14 on about 10-15 ft spacing. Some are over 20 feet high now and have grown together like a straight hedge. You can’t see through them. I have had several get some disease where the leaves get brown and fall off. While new shoots did sprout out, those never fully came back. Couldn’t ever determine what caused it but I replaced them with the largest I could find. They make a nice screen and grew pretty quickly. This was in nw la.

If you want a trick, fast-growing low maintenance shrub/bush, you want Elaeagnus. Makes for great privacy, but will get away from you if you don't keep it trimmed.

Savannah Hollies (Eagleston), Nellie R Stevens, East Palatka Holly, Fosters Holly. I would personally go with Savannahs as I like the lighter color green of them.

I need several hundred feet of hedge. Thibodaux. What plants do y’all suggest?

How tall do you want it to be?

Min 6-8’. I have a 400’ property line that has 4 houses backing up to it. I’d like to isolate that so I don’t look into their back yards and Vice versa. Don’t want it too thick, 10’ I guess would be max. Would plant 15’ off the property line so I can maintain one or two passes with my mower on the outside.

With that long a run I would suggest using 2 or 3 types of shrubs so if disease or pests attack one variety, you have a better chance of not losing the entire run. I would plant 10 Dwarf Burford Holly, 10 Loreperalum (many varieties so find one that gets to be 10' tall, should be easy to find) and the 10 cleyera. Keep repeating that pattern. I typically spec those shrubs at 36" o.c. but you could go 5'o.c. but it will take longer to fill in. Stay away from Photinia which people will suggest but they are very disease prone. If you want to go with just one shrub type then use dwarf burford holly.

Also came to say to look into viburnum. It’s grows fast and tall. I only have it along a short-ish segment along side and back corner of property.
I don’t have a ton so I can’t speak for price for long segment or border. But this stuff has been great for me.

Make sure to give a few feet for growth in respect for your neighbor. Don't just put it 1 or 2ft off property line..
