Chinese balloon reminds me of stories of Nazi subs off Louisiana coast during WW2

I’ve heard and read about those Nazi subs sinking ships off the coast of Louisiana. Did it create any kind of panic in New Orleans back then? Were old baws in Venice loading up shotguns looking for a fight? An old version of the Cajun Navy fighting U-boats would make for a cool movie, to be honest.

There are stories of shrimpers going out and trading fresh fruits and vegetables for gold.

ETA I had a fraternity brother from Houma who was searching for the UBoat that sunk off the mouth of the Mississippi. He never found it but somebody else eventually did. He told me a bunch of the lore surrounding it.

It reminds me of the Japs sending over balloon bombs since it's basically the same thing if they strapped a bomb to it.
